Hello Kitty Secret Garden Opens at Drusillas Park

Jayne Torvill OBE Opens Hello Kitty Secret Garden at Drusillas Park

Skating legend and Olympic Ice Dance Champion Jayne Torvill OBE officially opened the first permanent Hello Kitty attraction in Europe at Drusillas Park today (17 May).

The popular Dancing on Ice star skated to fame over 30 years ago, alongside professional partner Christopher Dean. The former British, European and World Champions were awarded the gold medal in the 1984 Winter Olympics after becoming the highest scoring figure skaters of all time. Jayne remains one of the most well-loved and recognisable sports personalities of our time and was appointed an OBE in the 2000 New Year Honours list.

To launch Hello Kitty Secret Garden at Drusillas Park, an opening ceremony took place at 11.30am.  Drusillas’ Managing Director, Laurence Smith said a few words to mark the occasion followed by Salvatore Zingrillo, representing Hello Kitty owners Sanrio. Jayne then declared the new attraction officially open by the cutting of a ribbon alongside Hello Kitty herself.

Drusillas’ Managing Director, Christine Smith commented: “We are absolutely delighted that Jayne Torvill agreed to attend our event and perform the official opening of Hello Kitty Secret Garden. It was a real honour to meet her and I know our visitors were as thrilled as we were to have such a popular personality at the Park.”

Hello Kitty Secret Garden is Drusillas Park’s biggest investment to date, expected to top £1million. Set in an English country garden, the new attraction includes three specially designed children’s rides; a Hello Kitty car ride, reach for the sky hopper ride and a tea cup ride. There’s also a Hello Kitty House and Parlour – where face painting and other activities take place – as well as regular meet and greet opportunities with the star herself during key holiday times.
Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or visit www.drusillas.co.uk

Hello Kitty Secret Garden Opens 18th May at Drusillas Park

Drusillas Rides into a New Era with First Hello Kitty Attraction in Europe!

After a year of preparation, Drusillas Park in East Sussex will open the first Hello Kitty attraction in Europe on 18th May, set to be one of the most hotly anticipated launches of 2014.

Drusillas Park is widely regarded as the best small zoo in the UK and was named ‘Visitor Attraction of the Year’ in 2010/11. The family business was acquired by Laurence and Christine Smith in 1997 and since then, the husband and wife team have invested heavily in the Park and seen visitor numbers increase.

Laurence and Christine Smith with Hello Kitty

The introduction of Hello Kitty follows a recent trend within several prominent UK visitor attractions to open areas dedicated to the most celebrated children’s characters and there really is no question regarding Hello Kitty’s popularity.

Since her creation in Japan in 1974 Hello Kitty has become a global phenomenon and is now the UK’s biggest girls’ brand. Add to this the fact that, according to the storyline Hello Kitty herself was born in London, it stands to reason there should be a Hello Kitty attraction within the UK.

Director Christine Smith explains the background to the deal: “We noticed the Hello Kitty brand about three years ago when we spotted lots of children coming to the Park wearing Hello Kitty tee shirts and hats. After investigating the brand, we decided to approach owners Sanrio directly to suggest a venture to bring Hello Kitty to Drusillas. We completed the deal in July 2013.”

Set within an English country garden, the new attraction is billed to include three specially designed Hello Kitty children’s rides; a tea cup ride, a ‘reach for the sky’ hopper ride and a car ride.  There is also a Hello Kitty House and Parlour, as well as regular meet and greet opportunities with Hello Kitty herself.

Hello Kitty Secret Garden is Drusillas Park’s biggest investment to date and is expected to top £1million.
